Two Days in the UK Network: Van Temperatures in July and Frost in January

A parcel in the UK spends its nights in trailers and depots and its days in a van. The climate it meets there is seasonal and regional, and the season most buyers worry about is not the one that does the repeated damage.

A parcel moving through the UK network on a two-day service spends most of its nights in unheated trailers and depots, and most of its last day in a delivery van that stops and starts from early morning to evening. Outside the box, the temperature follows the UK climate, which is mild in the south, markedly colder in the north and uplands, and seasonal everywhere. In July the outdoor air is warm but rarely extreme. In January much of the country crosses freezing point overnight and climbs above it by day, and a parcel travelling through that pattern can cross it more than once.

This article is the profile of those conditions: what the Met Office's averages show, how the network's own routine layers on top, and what a buyer can plan and record. It is about the conditions, not an assessment of any particular material or any particular arrival.

The shape of a two-day journey

Parcel networks in the UK share a common rhythm. Collections happen in the afternoon. Parcels are trunked overnight to a hub, sorted, trunked again to a delivery depot, and loaded onto vans in the early morning. The van then runs a round that can last most of the working day, with the load space opened at every stop.

  1. Afternoon: collected from the sender, often after sitting in a dispatch area or a collection cage.
  2. First night: in a trailer on a trunk route, then a hub sort. Trailers are generally unheated and follow the outdoor air with a lag.
  3. Day two: sorted indoors, where a large hall is warmer than the outdoor air in winter.
  4. Second night, on a two-day service: a delivery depot or another trailer.
  5. Final day: loaded before dawn, then several hours in a van whose load space is opened repeatedly.

No UK carrier publishes routine temperature data for its trailers, depots or van load spaces, so the outdoor climate is the best public proxy for what a parcel meets. The network layers two things on top of it: a lag, because a trailer full of parcels warms and cools more slowly than the air, and a sequence, because the parcel moves between spaces with different conditions several times in two days.

The seasonal numbers

The Met Office publishes 30-year averages for 1991–2020 for individual climate stations [4]. Two stations bracket the range a UK network covers. Greenwich, in London, is one of the mildest [1]. Braemar, in the Cairngorms, is one of the coldest inhabited places in the UK [2].

Read the January rows together. At Greenwich the average night stays above freezing, but roughly one night in five falls below it [1]. At Braemar the average minimum is below freezing and more than half of January's nights bring an air frost, while the average daytime maximum is comfortably above it [2]. That is exactly the pattern that makes a parcel cross zero twice a day.

The whole-year figures make the regional gap plain. Greenwich averages about 23 days of air frost a year; Braemar averages nearly 98 [1] [2]. A supplier in the south of England who has never seen a frosted parcel is shipping into a country where, for a large part of the map, frost is the ordinary winter condition rather than the exception.

The summer numbers are the less dramatic half. A mean July maximum in the low twenties in London and the high teens in the Highlands is a mild climate by European standards [1] [2]. The tail exists, though: the UK's verified record of 40.3 °C was set at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on 19 July 2022, with 46 stations beating the previous national record that week [3].

Why winter is the under-discussed risk

Most published shipping advice is written for hot climates and hot months, and UK buyers tend to import the same worry. The UK's more distinctive exposure runs the other way. A night in a trailer on a frost night, a morning in a warmer sorting hall, a second night in a cold depot, then a van that is opened thirty times in air a few degrees either side of zero: that is not one cold event but a cycle.

Geography sharpens it. A parcel bound for a northern or upland postcode is more likely to meet frost on every night of its journey, and those are also the postcodes where couriers add days, which adds nights. Summer: the profile, not the peak

UK summer transit is shaped less by the outdoor air than by where the parcel sits while the air is warm. A van parked at a kerb in afternoon sun, a trailer standing on a hub apron, or a collection cage by a south-facing dispatch door all run above the outdoor figure. How far above is not something any carrier publishes, so it cannot be put into numbers here, but the direction is not in doubt.

The practical summer lever is time. A parcel on the last round of the day has been in the van longest. A parcel that misses delivery and goes back to the depot has done the round twice. Service choice, dispatch day and someone being in to receive it change the summer profile more than the weather forecast does.

Planning around the season

A buyer cannot change the network, but can change how long a parcel spends in it and what it is packed to survive.

  1. Avoid late-week dispatch for anything temperature-sensitive, so the parcel does not spend a weekend in a depot.
  2. In December to March, prefer a next-day or guaranteed service to northern and upland postcodes, where every added day is another frost night.
  3. Ask the supplier whether its cold packaging has been qualified against both a summer and a winter profile, or only against summer.
  4. Arrange for someone to receive the parcel on the delivery day, so it is not returned to the depot for a second round.
  5. Where the material justifies it, ask for a temperature logger in the box and agree in advance who reads it.

What to record when a winter parcel arrives

A winter arrival is worth a two-minute note, made before the box is opened in a warm room.

  • Time of arrival and how long it was outside or in an unheated porch, if known.
  • Condition of the outer box: frost, ice, damp card or condensation.
  • Whether the contents feel colder than room temperature when the box is opened.
  • Any logger readout, including the minimum reached and how many times it crossed zero.
  • The dispatch date and service, so the number of nights in transit is on file.

Let a cold package reach room temperature before opening inner containers, so condensation forms on the outside of the packaging rather than on the contents. If the question afterwards is whether a peptide can be refrozen or kept, the note above is what that decision is made from. Without it, the decision is made from memory, which is worse.
